Q5 OR R5 ?
I remember in the good old days a few international station were using Q5 to give the signal report. Today internationally I seldom heard hams mentioned Q5, neither did they mention R5. Normally they just mentioned 59 ( five nine ). A few might mention 'Readability 5 and Signal Strength 9'. Many guidelines said signal report should be given in RST form. RST if really fit for CW, Readability, Signal Strength and Tone. Because of the international usage and guideline says so, so I do not use Q for readability anymore. On the other hand signal can be readable but the quality may be bad like malaria effect for instant. Worst than malaria could be broken at the peak envelope. So far I don't see any essay addressing the issue of readable but poor quality signal. As the rule of common sense goes, probably those old timers apply Q 1-5 to tell the state of the audio quality, other than readability. As far as I am concerned the usage of Q and R is not a big issue. It is not a CB or pirate lingo. To keep in phase with ARRL and RSGB let's use the RST to give the signal report though in SSB it is minus the tone. .
